Main Protective Bonding Checks

As part of our pre-installation survey, we will ask you to provide clear photographs of your main protective bonding to your gas and water services (where applicable).

This is an important part of the survey and allows us to assess whether your existing electrical installation appears suitable for an EV charger before we attend your property.

Why Do We Need These Photos?

An EV charger is a high-power electrical appliance that places a significant load on your electrical installation. Before we can connect it, we must ensure that your property's earthing and bonding arrangements comply with the current UK Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

  • Main protective bonding helps ensure that, in the event of an electrical fault, exposed metalwork such as incoming gas and water pipework remains at a safe voltage, reducing the risk of electric shock.
  • Requesting photographs before the installation allows us to:
  • Assess whether the bonding appears to be present and correctly installed.
  • Identify any potential issues before attending site.
  • Ensure we arrive with the correct materials if any remedial work is likely to be required.
  • Reduce delays on the day of installation.
  • Verification on the Day

Before any installation work begins, our engineer will carry out a visual inspection to verify that the bonding arrangements match the information provided during the survey.

  • If the bonding clamps or conductors are not visible—for example, because they are concealed behind cupboards, boxing-in or decorations—we will carry out additional electrical testing to verify that the earthing and bonding arrangements are safe and compliant.
  • These tests are essential to confirm that your electrical installation provides the required level of protection before an EV charger is connected.
  • If our testing identifies that the bonding is missing, inadequate or does not comply with current regulations, we will explain the findings and provide a quotation for any remedial work required before the EV charger can be installed.
  • These checks are not optional—they form part of our duty as a qualified electrical contractor to ensure every EV charger installation is safe, compliant and carried out to the highest professional standards.
